Warming the Soul

I woke up to yet another beautiful fall day here in Ann Arbor. The sun's out and reflecting off the red leaves of the burning bushes, setting them ablaze. It's a bit chilly, but definitely more enjoyable and bearable than the surprise snow we had just two days ago.

I'm squeezing in a short, early morning study session to get some work done before the football team plays. But before heading to the library I satisfied my empty stomach with a warm, hearty bowl of oatmeal. Nothing quite hits the spot like a tasty and hot breakfast on a day like this.

As a matter of fact, I can't say I have never not enjoyed a bowl of oatmeal, no matter what the season. It's one of those college staples that follows close behind coffee. And, best of all, it's a great addition to any frugal foodie's grocery list!

For the best price option, I usually resort to purchasing the 42 oz tub of Quaker Old Fashioned Oatmeal, which generally runs for around $2.98. It's a mere 140 calories per 1/2 cup (dry) serving and that expands into a filling bowl's-worth of breakfast once you heat it up! Quaker is a smart choice because it is low in saturated fat and cholesterol, provides 3 grams of soluble fiber, and is made with whole grains.

And even though the large tubs come filled with flavorless oats, there are endless options to spice (or sweeten) up your meal! My favorite additions include: diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, dried cranberries, nuts, and blueberries.
